Enel Brasil and the Government of the State of Bahia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (M)U) to carry out feasibility studies on green hydrogen production projects by Enel Green Power Brasil, the renewable generation arm of the Enel Group in the country. The technical, commercial and financial sectors for this project will be evaluated. The partnership aims to join efforts to analyze the assumptions that influence the feasibility of green hydrogen production projects in the state, fostering the future development of the entire production chain in the region. The memorandum lasts for one year, with possible extension.
Based on the results of the first stage of feasibility studies, the company will define, based on technical criteria and its business strategy, potential projects, their investments and deadlines for execution. Roberta Bonomi , who is leading the project for Enel, said that the company believes in green hydrogen as a complementary and fundamental strategic tool for accelerating decarbonization, especially for specific activities in the economy that, for technical and economic reasons, can adopt electrification from renewable sources in their production processes.
“This is the case of the chemical industry, for example, which has a strong presence in Bahia. We are currently the largest wind and solar operator in the country and we also want to play a leading role in the future green hydrogen market, generating jobs and opportunities for social and economic development. Brazil is already a powerhouse in clean energy generation and we believe that the production of hydrogen based on 100% renewable energy will be another competitive advantage for Brazil as the production costs associated with ENERL AAA this technology become more competitive ”, evaluated the executive.
The MOU with the Government of Bahia is the first document of this type signed by Enel in the country with a focus on green hydrogen projects and is part of the company’s global efforts to encourage the technical and economic feasibility of this type of solution in countries where is present. Enel Green Power develops and operates renewable energy plants around the world and is present in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. A world leader in clean energy, with a total capacity of around 54 GW and a generation mix that includes wind, solar, geothermal and hydropower, as well as energy storage facilities. Through Enel Green Power Brasil, its renewable generation arm in the country, the company is the largest solar and wind player in terms of installed capacity and operates more than 4.7 GW renewables in the country, of which more than 2.1 GW are from wind power, about 1.2 GW are from solar power and about 1.3 GW from hydro.
