April 16 (Reuters) – The Sirius offshore gas project in the Colombian Caribbean has completed more than half of its 120 required prior consultations, the head of Petrobras Colombia said on Thursday.
The project is a joint venture between Brazil’s Petrobras, which serves as operator with a 44.4% stake, and Colombia’s state-run Ecopetrol, which holds the remaining 55.6%.
Ecopetrol’s interim chief executive officer, Juan Carlos Hurtado, added that all consultations must be finalized by the end of the year.
Prior consultation is a legal requirement designed to protect the rights of ethnic communities to participate in decision-making for projects that may affect their territories, cultures, or livelihoods.
