Sept. 11 (splash247.com) Sumitomo Heavy Industries and Albatross Technology have formed a capital and business alliance to speed up the development of floating axis wind turbines (FAWTs), with the partners preparing to move from small-scale testing to a 2MW-class offshore demonstrator.
The cooperation will cover turbine design, production, installation, and maintenance, and the partners will also work to establish a domestic supply chain and mass-production framework.
The alliance follows an initial small FAWT demonstration in Nagasaki and marks the start of a larger offshore testing phase.
Albatross’ design differs from conventional horizontal-axis turbines by using a vertically oriented rotating shaft. The approach could benefit floating applications by simplifying some components and enabling a more compact platform, though performance and commercial viability will need to be proven at larger scale.
The partners aim to reduce project costs and improve the prospects for wider adoption of floating wind in Japan and international markets. They will also pursue a Japanese supply chain covering fabrication, installation, servicing, and eventual serial production.
Japan has the world’s sixth-largest exclusive economic zone, giving floating wind a potentially important role in expanding domestic power generation beyond the constraints of limited land and shallow seabed areas suitable for fixed-bottom turbines.
The companies said locally produced floating wind could reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, improve energy security and support the country’s decarbonisation targets.
