Sept. 7 – Petrobras has successfully met Ibama’s requirements and has been granted the license to drill three additional wells in block FZA-M-059, located in the Foz do Amazonas Basin. The new wells—named Manga, Crotalus, and PAD Morpho—will be crucial for the oil company to determine the reservoir’s size and assess the area’s commercial potential.
Ibama also authorized Petrobras to use an additional drillship, the Amaralista Star (NS-43), for the exploration program. However, the company may only use the vessel after demonstrating that specific modifications required for cuttings recovery operations in block FZA-M-59 have been implemented and making the vessel available for a prior inspection by Ibama.
Cuttings generated during the drilling of the “reservoir phase”—where the main oil reserve is located—and those from shallower reservoirs where oil presence has been confirmed may not be discharged into the sea.
The license also requires Petrobras to make the facilities at both Wildlife Response Centers available for the care and rehabilitation of manatees from the states of Pará and Amapá, as well as to relocate selected animals to acclimatization facilities or enclosures, as directed by Ibama.
It is worth noting that in August, Petrobras announced the confirmation of oil in block FZA-M-59, located off the coast of Amapá. The well is situated approximately 175 kilometers from the state’s coast, in a water depth of 2,886 meters.
