Brazil’s largest thermal power plant shut down after equipment failure

Aug 19 (Reuters) – Brazil’s largest thermal power plant, GNA II, ​said on Wednesday its operations ‌have been interrupted since August 10 after a failure in the steam turbine ​circuit breaker affected the unit’s ​step-up transformer.

• The gas-fired plant is located ⁠in the Acu port in ​Rio de Janeiro and has 1.7 ​gigawatts of installed capacity
• The plant belongs to a joint venture between BP, Siemens Energy, ​and Chinese electricity company SPIC
• There ​were no injuries or environmental impacts resulting from ‌the ⁠incident, GNA II said
• The plant’s technical staff and the equipment manufacturer are assessing the causes of the ​incident, evaluating ​a ⁠plan to resume the plant’s operation, it added
• The unavailability ​was reported to Brazilian power ​grid ⁠operator ONS and is already reflected in its dispatch schedule, according ⁠to ​the plant
