Tupi/Iracema Field Reaches Production of 1 Million Barrels per Day Again

Jan. 14 – The Tupi/Iracema field, located in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, reached a production of 1 million barrels/day this Friday (January 9th), repeating the historic mark first achieved in 2019. This result aligns with Petrobras’ new 2026-30 Business Plan, which foresees an increase in oil and gas production through the management and maximization of reservoir potential, improved production efficiency, increased water injection efficiency, and mapping of new opportunities.

“We always believed that Tupi/Iracema could return to past production levels. This asset is our first giant pre-salt field, with highly productive deposits. Our teams worked hard to ensure the resumption of production to a level consistent with the magnitude of the field. We are very proud to now operate two giants, with a potential of over 1 million barrels per day: Tupi/Iracema and Búzios, both in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin,” celebrates Magda Chambriard, president of Petrobras.

Petrobras connected eleven wells in Tupi/Iracema throughout 2025, which now has more than 150 wells drilled. The company is studying the construction of other wells, as well as evaluating the possibility of a new platform from 2031 onwards, and extending the lifespan of some of the nine existing platforms, with the goal of continuously generating value from the asset. The implementation of such activities is subject to the necessary approvals by the consortium and the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels), such as the analysis of the license extension request.

“This return of Tupi/Iracema to production of 1 million barrels per day reinforces that the pre-salt, over 16 years, has become one of the most competitive oil frontiers in the global industry and a hotbed of innovation. A unique combination of giant reserves, high productivity, oil with a smaller carbon footprint and above-average efficiency,” celebrates Petrobras’ Exploration and Production Director, Sylvia Anjos.

Of the 57 production platforms operated by Petrobras, 28 are exclusively in the pre-salt, which, in January 2025, reached an accumulated production of 7 billion barrels of oil, led by the three largest fields in operation in this layer: Tupi/Iracema, Búzios, the largest in the world in ultra-deep waters, and Mero.

The pre-salt layer, which represents about 80% of Petrobras’ production, has an unprecedented success story. The development of technologies for exploration and production in a previously unknown geological frontier has earned the company international recognition and created a legacy of knowledge for offshore industry projects.

Tupi/Iracema is operated by Petrobras, with partners Shell and Galp, and PPSA, the Union’s representative in the Tupi Shared Field.
