Giant Mero Field set new Production Record of 500,000 barrels per day

(PN) The giant Mero field, in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, reached a new historic milestone. Petrobras announced that the field reached the mark of 500,000 barrels of oil produced per day. Discovered in 2010, Mero is located in ultra-deep waters (depth of 2,100 meters), 180 km off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

This was Petrobras’ third field to reach this level – the other two are Tupi and Búzios. Mero currently has four platforms in operation. The fifth unit in the area, the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão, is expected to begin operations later this year, increasing Mero’s production to 770,000 barrels of oil per day.

“Mero is the third largest field in Brazil and, in terms of volume of oil in place and production, is behind only Tupi and Búzios, also located in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin. And production will increase even further, with the completion of the ramp-up of the FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias and the start-up of the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão”, she stated.

The CEO of Petrobrás, Magda Chambriard, said that the 500,000 barrels per day mark is the result of the work of several areas and the new technologies used in the projects and in the day-to-day operations. “The company remains committed to operating sustainably, optimizing the production of existing fields and, in this way, helping to provide the energy necessary for the country’s development”, she said.
