Chinese company SPIC signs agreement with Prumo for hydrogen and offshore wind in Porto Açu

(epbr) SPIC Brasil, a subsidiary of the Chinese generator, closed an agreement with Prumo Logística, a company controlled by the EIG that is responsible for the development of Porto do Açu, for joint renewable energy projects in the port complex located in the north of Rio de Janeiro.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed during President Lula’s visit to China this week, provides for feasibility studies for solar energy projects, offshore wind farms and the production of green and blue hydrogen.

SPIC already operates in Açu, as a partner of Gás Natural Açu (GNA), in natural gas thermoelectric generation. The first plant, with 1.3 GW of capacity, started operating in 2021. The second, with 1.7 GW, is under construction and will supply energy from 2025.

In partnership with Prumo, SPIC expands the fronts of action in Brazil, towards green hydrogen projects.

In a note, the director of Business Development at SPIC Brasil, Marcela Pacola, highlighted that green hydrogen “is one of the main vectors for accelerating the energy transition process” and that Prumo will study alternatives for production, storage, transport and application of hydrogen in industry.

SPIC’s portfolio of assets in Brazil totals more than 3 GW. In addition to owning a slice of GNA, the Chinese generator operates the São Simão hydroelectric plant, on the border between the states of Minas Gerais and Goiás; and two wind farms in Paraíba — Millennium and Vale dos Ventos.

It also has a majority stake in two solar projects being implemented in the Northeast – which, together, will have 738 MWp.

Outside of China, Brazil is SPIC’s main operation and investment country in the world. Globally, the group is present in 46 countries, has more than 200 GW of installed capacity, with more than 62% from renewable sources and 1.6 GW under construction.

Brazil and China get closer on the energy transition agenda
The agreement between SPIC and Prumo was signed this week, during the visit of president Lula and his delegation to China, where the authorities celebrated commitments in the area of clean energies.

In a joint statement released this Friday (4/14), Brazil and China affirm their commitment to bilateral dialogue to promote the energy transition and the mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions “in a fair and equitable way”, globally.

The two countries say they will cooperate in research to develop technologies for the decarbonization of energy matrices, with an emphasis on bioenergy, hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). And they note the need to consider regional characteristics.

As part of this approach, the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the China Development Bank (CDB) signed an agreement to raise up to US$ 1.3 billion to finance infrastructure and the green economy in Brazil.

Although the institutions’ declaration highlights the environmental sustainability and energy transition agenda, the resources may also be applied in sectors such as sanitation, oil and gas, agriculture and mining, among others.

The conditions will be detailed in two documents: one earmarking US$ 800 million for long-term investments and another for US$ 500 million for short-term investments.
