The Merchant Marine Fund has granted priority for financial support to the South American Tanker Company Navigação S.A. (Satco) for the acquisition of eight tanker vessels. The Atlântico Sul Shipyard (EAS), in Suape (PE), has a memorandum of understanding with Satco for the construction of the vessels, totaling more than R $ 2.2 billion.
The secretary of Economic Development of the state of Pernambuco and president of Suape, Thiago Norões, was at Satco headquarters in London two months ago to discuss the project. “Most of the Brazilian shipyards did not survive the economic moment we are going through, while ours knew how to learn from the difficulties, increasing their levels of competitiveness and regaining orders that had been lost, as well as new customers, including from outside Brazil. The government plays an active role in supporting this sector, “he says.
According to him, EAS and Vard Promar, also located in Suape, have portfolios of orders that assure their operations for the next years.
The Merchant Marine Fund also approved the amount of R $ 9.15 billion for the financing of shipbuilding projects, of which R $ 3.18 billion will be earmarked for the construction of five SuezMax tankers by EAS.
Satco is an EBN (Brazilian Shipping Company) with international investors and is connected to Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), based in Singapore.
In addition to EAS, the Vard Promar shipyard begins to redesign its performance profile and works to get orders in the repair sector.
