Brazilian police detained former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the highest-profile figure targeted so far in a corruption probe that has rocked Latin America’s largest country and is drawing closer to its center of power.
Police said he was taken to Congonhas airport in Sao Paulo for questioning. Live images broadcast on TV showed federal police deployed at the home of Lula on the outskirts of Sao Paulo on Friday morning. Crowds gathered outside Lula’s residence and at the airport, with some chanting in support of the former president and others calling for his imprisonment. The two sides occasionally clashed and blows were exchanged.
“There is evidence that former President Lula received sums from the Petrobras scheme” through an apartment and country home, federal prosecutors said in a statement on their website. “Also being investigated are payments to the ex-president, made by companies investigated in Carwash as supposed donations and speaking fees.”
