Guyana secures major OECD risk-rating upgrade, paving way for cheaper international financing

Oct. 19 ( Guyanachronicle.com) GUYANA has secured another significant international economic milestone, with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) upgrading the country’s risk classification from Category Five to Category Four, a development expected to reduce the cost of certain types of international financing and strengthen access to funding for major development projects.

The upgrade, which took effect on October 16, 2026, represents Guyana’s second improvement in the OECD’s country-risk classification in four years, following its advancement from Category Six to Category Five in 2026.

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, welcomed the development, describing it as a major signal of continued international confidence in Guyana’s economic management, fiscal discipline and creditworthiness.

According to a Ministry of Finance statement issued on Saturday, the improved classification reflects growing global recognition of Guyana’s strong economic fundamentals and sustained economic progress.

The OECD assesses countries using a classification scale ranging from 0 to 7, with Category 0 representing negligible country credit risk and Category Seven representing the highest risk.

With its latest upgrade, Guyana now shares Category Four status with countries including Brazil, The Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Paraguay and South Africa.

Notably, Guyana was one of only two countries to receive an upgrade during the latest assessment.
