Petrobras requests Ibama license to explore 3 additional wells in Amapá

Aug. 18 – Petrobras has filed a request to drill three wells with the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) for an environmental license to advance its oil and natural gas exploration campaign in the Foz do Amazonas Basin. This area is located along the Equatorial Margin, off the coast of the state of Amapá.

The request is part of the “Amapá Deepwater” exploration campaign and complies with the environmental requirements set by Ibama.

The Equatorial Margin shares geological characteristics with the producing areas of Guyana and Suriname, where major reserves have been discovered in recent years.

It is a region extending from the coast of Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte, comprising the Foz do Amazonas, Pará-Maranhão, Barreirinhas, Ceará, and Potiguar sedimentary basins.

Petrobras interest in the region is based on studies by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). These studies reveal that the total oil and gas potential of the Equatorial Margin could reach 30 billion barrels of oil equivalent, placing it among the world’s most promising exploration provinces.

Last week Petrobras announced the detection of hydrocarbons in an exploratory well currently being drilled in block FZA-M-59. The “Morpho” well, where the discovery was made, is located 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapá at a water depth of 2,886 meters.
