June 12 – Petrobras has updated its forecast for the completion of drilling at the Morpho well in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, off the coast of Amapá. The initial expectation was to finish work by the end of June, but the company informed IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) that it now intends to finalize the activity by August 7th.
It is worth remembering that drilling began in October of last year, after a long and drawn-out environmental licensing process with IBAMA. However, in January, the operation faced a setback: the ODN-II drillship, from Foresea, registered a drilling fluid leak, which led to the interruption of work. Activities only resumed the following month.
According to Petrobras’ Exploration and Production Director, Sylvia dos Anjos, the company’s exploratory objective in Morpho is located at a depth of approximately 6,000 meters. The state-owned company owns six blocks in the Foz do Amazonas Basin and foresees the drilling of eight wells in the region. In block FZA-M-059, where Morpho is located, the company has already requested authorization to drill contingent wells, the execution of which will depend on the results obtained in the current campaign.
Petrobras also requested authorization from IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) to use the Amaralina Star (NS-43) drillship, from Constellation, in exploratory activities in block FZA-M-59. “This rig will guarantee us, depending on the results, that we have another unit to meet our demand. We have several blocks and contingent wells. Therefore, it is very necessary that we have the availability of another rig,” stated Sylvia during a press conference held in May.
