TotalEnergies-led group schedules US$25 million seismic survey at Guyana’s Block S4

Jan. 6 (oilnow.gy) A consortium led by TotalEnergies plans to begin a US$25 million 3D seismic survey at Guyana’s offshore Block S4 in August 2026, a project summary from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said.

The proposed campaign will cover about 2,000 square kilometers in shallow waters roughly 40 km offshore, at depths of 20 to 30 meters. TotalEnergies Guyana said the data will be processed using current seismic imaging technology and used to evaluate subsurface structures and identify prospects for possible exploration drilling.

The survey is expected to involve a seismic vessel carrying 50 to 60 personnel. The full project, including mobilization and demobilization, is expected to span around 70 days and run into October. The company said vessel availability could delay the schedule by up to one month. Processing of the seismic data is expected to take about a year once acquisition is completed.

Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency said the project is not expected to significantly affect the environment and has therefore been exempted from the requirement to conduct a full environmental impact assessment (EIA).

According to the agency, potential impacts, mainly related to underwater noise and waste, are well understood and can be managed through a project-specific environmental management plan (EMP). It added that final approval is conditional on that plan being submitted and approved.

Block S4 spans 1,788 square kilometers and was awarded under Guyana’s 2023 offshore licensing round, with the production sharing contract signed in November 2025. TotalEnergies operates the block with a 40% interest, alongside QatarEnergy holding 35% and Petronas holding 25%.
