ANP – Brazil sets record oil and gas production in May

ANP released the Monthly Bulletin of Oil and Natural Gas Production for May 2025, which contains consolidated data on national production. The month of May registered a record in national oil and gas production, considering pre-salt, post-salt and onshore.

With regard to oil, 3.679 million barrels per day (bbl/d) were extracted, an increase of 1.3% compared to the previous month and 10.9% compared to the same month in 2024.

Natural gas production in May was 172.30 million cubic meters per day (m³/d). There was growth of 2.6% compared to April and 18.3% compared to May 2024.

Total production (oil + gas) was 4.763 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d).

Pre-salt
There was also a new record in oil and natural gas production in the pre-salt, which was 3.803 million boe/d. This is an increase of 1.8% compared to the previous month and 14.8% compared to May 2024.

Pre-salt production, which occurred through 163 wells, corresponded, in the month, to 79.8% of the national total. Separately, oil production was 2.943 million bbl/d and natural gas production was 136.75 million m³/d.

Natural gas utilization

In May, natural gas utilization was 97.5%. 55.41 million m³/d were made available to the market and flaring was 4.29 million m³/d. There was a 13.9% decrease in flaring compared to the previous month and a 20.9% increase compared to May 2024.

Origin of production
In the month, offshore fields produced 97.6% of the oil and 87.6% of the natural gas. The fields operated by Petrobras, alone or in consortium with other companies, were responsible for 89.30% of the total produced. Production originated from 6,535 wells, 531 of which were offshore and 6,004 onshore.

Fields and facilities
In May, the Tupi field, in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, was the largest producer, registering 822.71 thousand bbl/d of oil and 41 million m³/d of natural gas. The facility with the largest production was the FPSO Guanabara, in the shared Mero field, with 183,948 bbl/d of oil and 12.13 million m³/d of natural gas.
