CEO Magda Chambriard confirms Maurício Tolmasquim’s departure from Petrobras

(eixos) Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard confirmed that the company’s Energy Transition and Sustainability Director, Maurício Tolmasquim, is leaving his position.

The decision comes after Tolmasquim was appointed to the Board of Directors of Eletrobras by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Magda Chambriard spoke to the press during her participation in the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, Texas.

“It is a fact that these two positions — the Petrobras board of directors and the Eletrobras Board — are incompatible. It is a fact, therefore, that Director Tolmasquim is leaving Petrobras,” stated the CEO.

According to Magda, the Energy Transition and Sustainability department will continue with the same current structure, including maintaining natural gas under its responsibility.

The transition process should last 30 days. Petrobras is looking for a replacement for Tolmasquim during this period.

Maurício Tolmasquim joined Petrobras in April 2022, at the invitation of Jean Paul Prates, then president of the company at the beginning of Lula’s third term. He took over as executive manager of Strategy, responsible for multi-year investment plans and long-term planning.

Later, with the creation of the Energy Transition and Sustainability department, he became the first head of the new department.

Technical profile and performance in the sector
With a Master’s degree in Energy Planning Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Tolmasquim is a full professor at COPPE/UFRJ.

He was president of the Energy Research Company (EPE) between 2004 and 2016, during the Lula and Dilma Rousseff governments, and was also executive secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

He has been a prominent figure in debates on energy transition, a central theme in Petrobras’ strategy under the new management.
