New FPSO for Equinor’s Bacalhau Field Arrives in Brazil

The FPSO Bacalhau arrived at its final destination this Saturday, February 22. The vessel was built to operate in the Bacalhau field, located in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, approximately 185 km off the coast of the municipality of Ilhabela, in the state of São Paulo. MODEC, responsible for the design, construction and operation of the platform in the initial phase, completed construction of the unit in Singapore in December 2024.

Contracted by Equinor, the FPSO Bacalhau is one of the largest platforms ever delivered to Brazil. It has a superstructure measuring 370 meters long and 64 meters wide, with the capacity to produce up to 220 thousand barrels of crude oil.

The FPSO Bacalhau uses the “M350 Hull”, a double-hull design developed specifically to accommodate larger topsides and greater storage capacity compared to conventional VLCC tankers, with extended service life and improved operability. The platform is MODEC’s 17th built for the Brazilian offshore and the first in partnership with Equinor. In addition to the FPSO Bacalhau, MODEC has another project under construction for the Brazilian offshore: the FPSO Raia, also owned by Equinor.

About MODEC – MODEC is a global leader in the construction, chartering and operation of oil and gas production platforms and has over 55 years of history. For over two decades in Brazilian waters, MODEC operates 13 oil and gas platforms, has one unit under construction and another in the final phase of commissioning for the country. It has over 3,200 employees working in Brazil.
