(PN) Equinor, in partnership with CBO and Wärtsilä, has completed the hybridization of the CBO Wiser, a PSV (Platform Supply Vessel) type vessel. The vessel now has a battery system and uses both diesel and electric power, becoming the first of its kind in Brazil to operate in this way. With this innovation, a reduction of up to 30% in the ship’s CO2 emissions is expected, marking a significant advance for sustainability in the maritime sector. The vessel is part of a contract with Equinor Brazil, in force since 2022.
“Brazil is a key country for Equinor’s strategy. Here, we have been able to take important steps in our journey to reduce CO2 emissions globally. The conversion of this vessel is a practical example in this sense. Through projects like this and other initiatives, we will continue to move towards our ambition of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050,” said Paulo Henrique Van Der Ven, Director of Shared Operations at Equinor in Brazil.
The CBO Wiser was the first vessel to carry out this type of installation in Brazil, and is also the second hybrid propulsion vessel for the offshore oil & gas sector. The first, the PSV Delta Commander, entered into operation in December 2023, also serving Equinor in the Bacalhau field. PSV vessels are responsible for transporting supplies and equipment necessary for the operation of the assets from the mainland to the offshore units.
