Petrobras, in consortium with the companies CNOOC, CNODC and PPSA, reached a new milestone: the Buzios field reached 1 billion barrels of oil (bbl) produced. The feat was achieved on March 31st, and adds up to the production of the five units in operation in the largest field in the world in ultra-deep waters, the FPSOs P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77 and Almirante Barroso. Petrobras’ Director of Exploration and Production, Joelson Mendes, seemed euphoric with this new milestone: “It’s not just an impressive number. This achievement is the result of the collective work of many people, in the most diverse teams, along with innovation in the ways of doing things, which is Petrobras’ hallmark. In addition to the use of cutting-edge technologies developed to increase the efficiency of reservoirs. We work hard to achieve this goal: to produce responsibly, safely and profitably.”
Petrobras says that, looking ahead, the numbers tend to grow even more. With new production systems that will be installed in the coming years, the field’s capacity will be increased to 2 million barrels of oil per day by 2030. “As we celebrate this memorable moment, we also recognize that our work is far from over. This milestone is another step in our ongoing journey of excellence and innovation. We have new production systems in design that will boost production in the Buzios field, contributing to the future of Petrobras”, stated the executive manager of the Buzios field, Marcio Kahn.
In June last year, Buzios had already recorded accumulated production of 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent – which considers oil in barrels added to gas production, converted to barrels of oil equivalent (boe). Located 180 km from the coast, the Buzios field began operating in 2018 and is collecting positive results, in addition to the most productive wells in the country, at more than 2 thousand meters depth. The thickness of its reservoir is the same height as Sugarloaf Mountain – and its length is more than twice as long as Guanabara Bay. In 2020, Petrobras won the OTC (Offshore Technology Conference) Award for the set of technologies developed to make production in Buzios viable. The latest generation solutions used there increased field efficiency, boosted production, in addition to consistently reducing costs.
