Founded on October 3, 1953, Petrobras developed alongside Brazil and became the largest company in the country, an icon for Brazilians. An international reference in the oil and gas sector, the company has achieved notable achievements and has become a company of global relevance.
The boosting of the energy industry, the discovery of the pre-salt, technological leadership in deep waters, cutting-edge innovation, and socio-environmental commitment are milestones in the company’s history over the last seven decades.
Petrobras turns 70 as the largest investor in the federal government’s new PAC (R$323 billion). The company is the largest offshore oil operator in the world and one of the oil producers with the lowest emissions in the world and has a refining park with increasing levels of efficiency and productivity.
Looking ahead, for the next 70 years, Petrobras’ objectives focus on the sustainability of the business and the world. The energy transition is a philosophy with which the entire company is in tune and determined.
Brazil is our energy
Encouraging regionality is one of Petrobras’ strategic objectives at 70 years old, at the same time that it deals with one of the biggest challenges in the company’s history: leading the fair energy transition movement in the country, positioning itself as a protagonist of the new moment, reconnected to demands of society and valuing diversity.
The company has already started to face the challenge. In addition to being the company with the most knowledge of the Brazilian maritime environment, Petrobras celebrates its 70th anniversary as the company with the greatest potential for wind generation in Brazil. The position was achieved thanks to the request for environmental licensing, with Ibama, of ten maritime areas with energy development potential of up to 23 GW.
In another promising area, biorefining, the company has intensified its operations, expanding the production of fuels with renewable content, while seeking profitable diversification with new businesses in the hydrogen and carbon capture segments.
Between 2015 and 2022, Petrobras managed to reduce its absolute operational emissions of greenhouse gases by 39%, with increased efficiency in emissions in all segments in which it operates. The reduction, in line with the ambition of achieving absolute zero operational emissions by 2050, reinforces the company’s commitment to expanding its operations in low-carbon businesses.
