Stolthaven Santos and the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex, a joint venture formed by the government of Ceará and the Port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the study of a new storage terminal in Porto do Pecém, Brazil. The terminal will focus on providing storage and handling services for green hydrogen and associated products.
Porto do Pecém has great potential for generating wind and solar energy, which is essential for the production of green hydrogen. The local Processing and Export Zone is fully integrated with the Port of Pecém, which is connected to an extensive gas distribution network. As Europe’s largest port, the Port of Rotterdam is well positioned to provide valuable information and expertise as it is already gearing up to operate as Europe’s green hydrogen gateway. Options for the Pecém terminal include a bonded ammonia warehouse, a raw material used in the production of hydrogen.
Marcelo Schmitt, General Manager of Stolthaven Santos, said: “We are happy and motivated to partner with the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex, which supports our long-term strategy of investing in sustainable supply chain logistics. Stolthaven Santos is committed to supporting the global energy transition, moving from relying on fossil fuels to greener energy sources. Our experience operating state-of-the-art terminals, along with our commitment to sustainability and shared values with our partners, make this a very exciting opportunity.”
“We are very pleased with the signing of this memorandum of understanding with Stolthaven, a company of recognized expertise not only in Brazil, but in the world. Our teams, from Pecém and Stolt, are already working on technical studies that will allow us to advance in the feasibility of implementing the project in the Pecém port terminal area”, added Danilo Serpa, CEO of Complexo do Pecém.
