ANP approves postponement of Jupiter’s Commerciality declaration until 2026

(PN) The board of the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) approved the postponement for five years of the declaration of commerciality of the Jupiter discovery, in block BM-S-24, in the Santos Basin. This is the second time the deadline is extended – the first time was in 2016. The new deadline will be November 2026.

The block is operated by Petrobras (80%), in consortium with Petrogal (20%). The state-owned company claimed that it asked for the postponement due to the high levels of carbon dioxide contained in the accumulation, an extremely challenging situation from a technical point of view. Petrobras says that in this scenario, technological development will be necessary to allow the use of discovered hydrocarbons.

“The operator [Petrobrás] informs that the Consortium has made substantial investments, complying with the minimum exploratory program and carrying out the commitments established in the Evaluation Plan and investments during the first postponement, including a training test in July 2020 to obtain of fluids for testing the HISEP technology”, detailed the director of the ANP, Marina Abelha, who was the rapporteur of the request for postponement.

In September 2020, Petrobras announced that the formation test at Jupiter had encouraging results, which pointed to excellent well productivity, high flow rates and a condensate oil of very high added value. In January of this year, Petrobras declared that it had launched the public notice for hiring suppliers to carry out the project, construction, installation and testing of the HISEP technology. The company estimates that the chosen manufacturer will be announced in August. The equipment should be installed in 2025. The innovation, patented by the company, aims to separate and reinject, even at the bottom of the sea, the gas with a high CO2 content produced together with oil.
