SPIC COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF PORTO DO AÇU GNA THERMAL POWER PLANTS

The Brazilian arm of the Chinese electricity company SPIC officially entered the Porto do Açu thermoelectric park, in São João da Barra (RJ). The company completed the acquisition of 33% of the GNA I and GNA II projects, which add up to 3 GW of generation from LNG. SPIC will contribute its experience in operating strategy and project management in Brazil. The Chinese also signed an agreement for potential entry into the future projects of the GNA III and GNA IV thermoelectric plants, which will use LNG and domestic gas from the pre-salt reserves.

The GNA I plant has an installed capacity of 1.3 GW and should start operating this semester. The first LNG cargo to be used at the plant was transferred to the regasifier (FSRU) BW Magna at the end of last year. The works of the GNA II plant are expected to start this semester, with the forecast of generating 5,000 jobs during the construction stage.

The other partners in the projects are Prumo, BP and Siemens. Prumo will be responsible for port infrastructure, operations, development and integration of projects. BP will be the LNG supplier. Siemens’ financial arm will contribute capital, technology and experience in project management by type. Siemens Energy is already working on the construction of the plants and will offer services for the operation and maintenance of the plants.
