After being declared commercial by Equinor, in December last year, the Carcará area will gain a new name, well befitting the Norwegian culture. The asset will be renamed Bacalhau and the choice is interesting and symbolic because it is the first time, in the last 50 years, that a field in the country will be named after a fish that is not part of the Brazilian fauna.
As is well known, since the mid-1970s, Brazil’s oil fields have been named after fish that live in the waters of our country. Cod, in turn, is a traditional Norwegian culinary food, being exported by that country since the beginning of the 18th century.
In the area corresponding to the BM-S-8 block, the asset will be called Bacalhau. Within the North block of Carcará, the new name becomes Bacalhau Norte. To remember, this distinction happens because the discovery of Carcará is within two different licenses: BM-S-8 (Concession Regime) and Norte de Carcará (Sharing Regime), both in the Santos Basin.
Bacalhau is located 220 km off the coast of the municipality of Ilhabela, in the state of São Paulo, and has a water depth of about 2,050 meters. Along with the Declarations of Commerciality, which have already been approved by the ANP, the consortium that explores the area submitted the Final Report of the Area Evaluation Plan to the National Petroleum Agency (ANP).
The consortium that operates in the BM-S-8 block is operated by Equinor (40%), in partnership with ExxonMobil (40%) and Petrogal Brasil (Galp) (20%). It is the same composition of the consortium that operates in Norte de Carcará, but with the presence of Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA) as manager of the Sharing Contract.
