Total and Google Cloud have signed an agreement to develop artificial intelligence that will be applied to subsurface data analysis for oil and gas exploration and production.
The agreement provides for programs that interpret images from seismic studies (using Computer Vision technology) and automate the analysis of technical documents (using natural language processing technology) through artificial intelligence to make them more accessible to engineers, geologists and geophysicists.
In this project, Total’s geoscientists will work side by side with the Google Cloud team, based at the Advanced Solutions Lab in California. In 2013, Total already used artificial intelligence in predictive maintenance projects in facilities.
“Our goal is to give our geoscience engineers a personal assistant who will free them to focus on high-value-added tasks,” said Kevin McLachlan, Total’s E & P vice president.
