Petrobras contracted with the Shandong Kerui Consortium and Potential Method to retake the works of the Comperj Natural Gas Processing Unit (NGPU) in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro. The contract, valued at around R$2 billion, was signed on the 22nd of March by representatives of the companies. The goal is for the unit to be operational by 2020, with capacity to process up to 21 million cubic meters per day of natural gas.
The resumption of the project is fundamental for Petrobras, who needs the NGPU to be able to dispose of the natural gas that will be produced in Mero and in other fields of the Santos Basin pre-salt, already the country’s largest natural gas producer. According to ANP data, 57.4 million cubic meters per day of natural gas were produced in the region in January.
But the contract also has political and social weight. The resumption of the work of Comperj is an old litigation of deputies, mayors and councilors of surrounding municipalities. More than once, the president of Petrobras, Pedro Parente, met with mayors and deputies to discuss the issue. In February of last year, Parente assured the mayors of Conleste the conclusion of the NGPU. “You can be absolutely sure that the work will be restarted. This unit has to happen, it’s a priority for us, “Parente said at the time.
Yesterday, the Minister of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services, Marcos Jorge, was visiting the project. “It is good to know that Petrobras is resuming investments in this unit, which will process the natural gas from the extraction of oil from the pre-salt layer,” he said..
