Odebrecht Oil and Gas is now called Ocyan. The strategy is a measure to try to disassociate the company’s image from the Car Wash investigations.
The Odebrecht Group is undoubtedly the one whose brand was most affected by the corruption scandals reported by the operation. Its former president, Marcelo Odebrecht, was imprisoned for two and a half years and was convicted of corruption, money laundering and criminal organization.
With the agreement, he paid a fine of more than R $ 73 million and his sentence fell from 31 years in prison in a closed regime for 10 years. With the expected progression of the penalty, in 2025 he will be free.
But Odebrecht Oil and Gas is not the only company involved in the Car Wash investigation to change its name. Below is an overview of who has already changed or can change their name because of the operation:
Odebrecht Oil and Gas
Odebrecht Oil and Gas announced on January 15, 2017 the change of its name to Ocyan. The company has contracts for maintenance of platforms of Petrobras and is also a charter of drilling rigs and drilling rigs for the oil company.
The last platform chartered by the company for the oil company was the FPSO Pioneiro de Libra, which is responsible for the Mero field’s Long Run Test (TLD), the first area of production sharing in the country, a partnership between Petrobras, Shell, Total , CNPC and CNOOC. The project is a partnership with the Norwegian company Teekay, which is also a partner of the now Ocyan in the PFSO City of Itajaí, which produces in the Baúna field, in the Santos Basin.
Ocyan remains on the list of the precautionary blockade, even though it was not investigated by Car Wash. The company expects to leave the list and be able to contract again with the oil company. Ocyan said through its press office that it has already had an outsourced, independent internal audit that found nothing about the company, which has come out of extrajudicial recovery at the end of last year.
Braskem
Braskem was the first Odebrecht Group company to do a brand repositioning after Car Wash. On August 16 of last year the company launched a new visual identity, leaving aside the red background – brand of the Odebrecht group – and the white letters that accompanied the company for years.
“We are a young company with a strong and successful strategy of global growth. To celebrate 15 years and mark the beginning of a new phase, we are launching a new visual identity that will accompany our trajectory, challenges and achievements, “said Fernando Musa, CEO of Braskem at the time.
A month earlier, Braskem announced that the Federal Court of Curitiba approved the leniency agreement signed between the petrochemical company and the Federal Public Ministry in Operation Car Wash.
Base Engineering
In June 2017, Schahin Engineering announced that it was making a brand repositioning and assuming a new name. Base Engineering aims to focus its activity in the oil and gas sector and the change also intended to safeguard the company’s business with Petrobras.
Schahin Engenharia was for many years Modec’s partner in chartering FPSOs to Petrobras. The company is a partner of several projects in the Santos and Campos Basin. The company also worked in the drilling area of wells, where it also chartered drill rigs for Petrobras. It still has a drilling unit chartered with Petrobras. Vitoria 10000 was the result of a legal dispute between the state company, which tried to rescind the contract of the unit, and the company.
New Engevix
The company also underwent a process of restructuring the brand, despite having kept its name Engevix, the engineering company Nova Engevix, bought by Jose Antunes Sobrinho for R $ 2 from partners Gerson Almada and Cristiano Kok, both arrested by Operation Car wash.
Engevix was contracted by Petrobras to build the eight hulls of the Santos Basin’s replicating FPSOs in 2010. The first of the units, the FPSO P-66, came on stream last year. Other units are due to come on stream in 2018.
Part of the construction of the hulls had to be transferred abroad because the company did not have the ability to build all the hulls. Petrobras used the Engevix case as one of the reasons for the waiver request for the first definitive FPSO of the Mero field in the Santos Basin.
