Wärtsilä is forming partnerships with a number of shipyards to assist in meeting new International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards that will come into effect in September this year for the management of ballast water in ships.
According to the Finnish company, the objective is to provide shipowners and operators with all the information and assistance needed to adapt the Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS).
“We are very well positioned to serve entire fleets that need to adapt to these requirements, and we can provide a valuable service to the shipowners,” Wärtsilä Services general manager Markus Ljungkvist said.
The company has closed an agreement with Singapore’s Keppel shipyard in recent weeks and already has similar partnerships with Chinese companies COSCO Weihai and CSSC JiuJiang, and currently has production facilities of this type in the UK and China.
