Rio de Janeiro, July 18, 2016 – Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) hereby responds to Official Letter 346/2016-CVM/SEP/GEA-1, requesting clarification, as follows:

We are writing in regard to the news stories published in two newspapers – ‘Petrobras quer que sócia nos EUA a indenize por refinery’ [‘Petrobras wants partner in USA to compensate it for refinery’], in the Power section of Folha de São Paulo; and ‘Estatal entra com ação contra ex-sócia’ [‘State-owned company files lawsuit against former partner’], in the Companies section of Valor Econômico – which contain statements about Petrobras’ lawsuit in the United States to demand compensation from Astra Oil (involved in the acquisition of the Pasadena refinery in the United States).
We request a statement from Petrobras about the content of these articles, as well as other information you consider important regarding the subject. This statement should be submitted via the Empresa.NET system, in the ‘Market Announcement’ category. Type: ‘Clarifications about CVM/BOVESPA consultations.’ Subject: ‘News published in media.’ It must include a copy of this official letter.”
Petrobras confirms that it has filed a lawsuit against the Astra group in the United States, in order to obtain compensation for losses arising from illicit conduct related to the purchase of the Pasadena refinery, in Texas, in 2006.
The lawsuit is still in the initial phase and facts deemed relevant on the subject will be timely announced to the market.
