A group of high-profile lawyers, including a former member of the ruling Workers’ Party, will file a request on Wednesday to begin impeachment proceedings against Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, alleging she continued to doctor fiscal accounts this year.
The petition, which was originally expected Tuesday, is being closely watched by investors and legislators as it has the backing of Brazil’s two largest opposition parties. Lower house PresidentEduardo Cunha, who declared himself a member of the opposition, has the power to accept the request and thereby begin a protracted legal process. He is facing charges of corruption before the Supreme Court, prompting lawmakers to call for his own resignation.
