Ibama Requests Technical Details from Petrobras Regarding Biodegradable Fluid Leak at the Equatorial Margin

Jan. 8 – The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) sent an official letter to Petrobras (PETR3;PETR4), requesting technical information about the biodegradable fluid leak accident during offshore drilling activity in Block FZA-M-59, on the Equatorial Margin. The letter was sent by the General Coordination of Environmental Licensing of Marine and Coastal Projects (CGMac) according to electronic records.

Ibama received the initial communication about the case last Sunday.

Petrobras reported a “fluid loss” during drilling in two auxiliary lines connecting the drilling rig exploring the Morpho well. The company adopted all control measures and there was no damage to the environment or people, according to the statement.

On Wednesday, Ibama requested a report detailing the facts that led to the oil spill accident, including a qualitative and quantitative description of the spilled fluid, and laboratory reports. It also requested an impact assessment and the adoption of measures to prevent a recurrence of the accident.

The official letter does not specify a deadline for submitting these requests, but leaves it open for Petrobras to provide a date.

Ibama already clarified in a technical opinion last year that the license conditions can be modified during the course of the activity.

Changes to the project specifications, the purpose of the undertaking, the scope of the programs, or the planned deadlines depend on the approval of the environmental agency.
