Porto do Açu Expands Operations with Petrobras and Integrates Exploration, Production and Decommissioning

Dec. 2 – Porto do Açu is optimistic about future demand in the oil platform decommissioning market, even after the adjustment in resources that Petrobras intends to allocate to this activity. The assessment is that, even if the state-owned company decides to extend production in more mature fields, the services provided directly or indirectly will continue to be in high demand.

“Porto do Açu is able to operate in Petrobras projects both in the exploration phase, through its offshore support base, and in the production phase, with flexible pipe manufacturers, in addition to decommissioning, which accounts for a substantial portion of the growth in our service revenues,” explained the CEO of the Port of Açu, Eugenio Figueiredo, during a meeting with the press.

In its 2026-2030 Business Plan, Petrobras estimated investments of US$9.7 billion in platform decommissioning and well abandonment over the next five years. In the 2025-2029 Business Plan, the value was US$9.9 billion for the sustainable decommissioning of equipment and well abandonment.

Currently, the P-36 and P-33 platforms are being dismantled at the complex located in São João da Barra, in northern Rio de Janeiro state. The contract for these services has a duration of three years.

Today, the Port of Açu has three berths capable of simultaneously receiving more than three FPSOs or drilling rigs undergoing pre-decommissioning, with the possibility of expansion to up to ten units through operational adjustments.

As reported in October, the company announced a partnership with IKM Testing, a branch of the Norwegian group IKM, to create a sustainable decommissioning hub.
