Nov. 6 – The project to install a shipyard at Porto Central, currently under construction in Presidente Kennedy, in southern Espírito Santo, has made further progress. M.A.R.S. Europe A/S, the European subsidiary of M.A.R.S. Inc., has signed a new agreement with Porto Central to detail the project for the construction of a world-class shipyard in the state, specializing in dismantling and recycling old ships and oil platforms.
In May 2024, the two companies had already signed an agreement to conduct a feasibility study for the project’s implementation in the new port area in southern Espírito Santo, and the studies showed that the location is viable. The European company specializes in complex projects and ship recycling.
The signing of the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the companies took place at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Brazil 2025, an event held last week in Rio de Janeiro.
According to Porto Central, based on the newly signed MOU, investments will be made to detail the engineering and safety aspects of economic viability. These new studies are expected to be completed in 2026, and the results will inform the decision on project implementation.
“This extension reflects our mutual dedication to boosting Brazil’s offshore industry, promoting sustainable decommissioning practices and fostering regional economic growth. Recognizing the current pressures on ports due to new construction and maintenance plans, we are committed to jointly developing a facility dedicated to ship dismantling and recycling, similar to Denmark’s successful model. This will alleviate port congestion and create a specialized hub for offshore asset recycling in Brazil,” said Kim Thygesen, CEO of M.A.R.S. Europe.
For Porto Central, the partnership is strategic in positioning Brazil as a global benchmark hub for sustainable offshore asset management.
