Porto do Açu and SISTAC Sign Agreement to Provide Decommissioning Services

Oct. 29 – Porto do Açu and SISTAC, a leading company in the Brazilian market for inspection, maintenance, and repair of submerged structures for the energy industry, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the Offshore Technology Conference – OTC Brasil, to study the joint offering of decommissioning services at the port-industrial complex located in São João da Barra, in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

“The partnership is part of Porto do Açu’s strategy to host the first sustainable decommissioning hub in Brazil, which includes the stages of temporary berthing, carried out in Açu since 2024, pre-dismantling, and dismantling,” emphasizes Vinicius Patel, director of port administration and services at Porto do Açu.

The agreement foresees the potential provision of services for the pre-decommissioning phase of platforms and other offshore units, such as inspection, maintenance, and repair of structures. Among the activities that may be carried out are hull cleaning, mooring line cutting, pull-out (disconnection and removal of underwater equipment during decommissioning), welding, and plate maintenance.

“The partnership with the Porto do Açu reinforces SISTAC’s commitment to the safety, innovation, and sustainability of operations, meeting the demands of the oil & gas sector in Brazil,” says SISTAC CEO Carlos Madaleno, highlighting the use of cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art specialized equipment.

Currently, Açu has a terminal with the capacity to simultaneously serve up to three platforms in pre-decommissioning activities, with the possibility of expansion to up to ten units.

Among the advantages of the port-industry complex are its proximity to the Campos Basin, licensing and capacity for biofouling removal (such as sun coral), the presence of a unified control center for risk and emergency management, and integration with the existing scrap logistics network in the country.
