AUG. 28 – MODEC, a global leader in the construction, chartering, and operation of floating oil and gas production platforms, has taken another step toward decarbonizing its operations. The company has signed a contract with Norwegian Eld Energy to test a pilot system of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which generate energy without combustion. One of the vessels in MODEC’s fleet in the Brazilian pre-salt layer will be the first offshore unit in the world to receive this technology.
SOFCs are an innovative, highly efficient alternative for generating electricity. Similar to batteries, they convert chemical energy into electricity, without combustion, through an electrochemical reaction between a fuel gas, produced by the unit itself, and oxygen. Because they operate at high temperatures and without burning fuel, the cells are more efficient and have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional gas turbine systems.
For Leonardo Santoro, MODEC’s Technical Management Manager in Brazil, the country meets all the necessary conditions to host the pilot project. “A mature industry, relevant assets, and a highly qualified technical team are some of the factors that contributed to the development of this project on one of our FPSOs. As one of MODEC’s main hubs, Brazil plays a strategic role in this advancement, aligned with our global vision of innovation and decarbonization of operations,” he comments.
Following the successful feasibility study conducted in a laboratory using simulated gas, the pilot plant – with a generation capacity of 40 kW – is being built by Eld Energy in Bergen, Norway. “This is not only a technical milestone, but also a clear sign of the role that SOFC solutions can play in the decarbonization of offshore operations,” comments Hans Fredrik Lindøen-Kjellnes, CEO of Eld Energy.
Testing is expected to begin in 2026. If the experiment is successful, the technology could provide a more sustainable and stable alternative for power generation in offshore operations, contributing to MODEC’s decarbonization strategy, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
About MODEC – MODEC is a global leader in the construction, chartering, and operation of oil and gas production platforms, with over 55 years of experience. With over two decades of experience in Brazilian waters, MODEC operates 13 oil and gas platforms, two units under construction, and another in the final commissioning phase for the country.
