Aug 21 (Reuters) – Bruno Moretti is the leading candidate to become chairman of Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras after Pietro Mendes resigned from the role, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.
Moretti currently serves as special secretary for government analysis at the office of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s chief of staff. He is backed by Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira for the position, according to the source.
Mendes submitted his resignation on Thursday after being confirmed by the Senate for a position at Brazil’s oil and gas regulator ANP.
Local media outlets Broadcast and Valor Economico reported earlier in the day that Moretti was in the pole position to replace him.
Brazil’s Mines and Energy Ministry, the office of Lula’s chief of staff, and Petrobras did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
