Ibama prepares to issue first license for offshore wind power

(eixos.com.br) The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) will announce, next week, the first environmental license for an offshore wind project in Brazil.

Exios learned that the license will be for a pilot project of the Senai Institute for Innovation in Renewable Energy (ISI-ER), in Rio Grande do Norte.

The decision of the Environmental Licensing Board (DILIC) of Ibama was registered on June, one day after Congress overturned the presidential vetoes to amendments to the text of the legal framework for offshore wind power.

The project “68 RN-10 SENAI Test Site” foresees the installation of the plant 20 km off the coast of Areia Branca — near the Port-Island of Areia Branca. The structure will include two wind turbines, with a combined power of 22 MW.

The initiative will serve to test the performance of offshore wind generation equipment in the conditions of the Brazilian equatorial sea, according to Senai, which plans to launch a “multi-client notice” for companies that want to get involved in the project later this year.

There are currently 104 offshore wind projects with licensing requests from Ibama, totaling 247.3 GW of capacity.

Of these, only three requests are for pilot projects. One of them is from Senai, in Rio Grande do Norte, and two others in Rio de Janeiro, one from Petrobras and the other from the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Rio Grande do Norte has 14 requests at Ibama for projects totaling 25.4 GW.
