(Reuters) – Eletrobras (ELET3) has entered into a partnership with Ocean Winds, a joint venture between Engie and EDP Renováveis dedicated to offshore wind energy, to study the development of offshore wind projects in Brazil.
The memorandum of understanding signed by the companies on Tuesday provides for the sharing of knowledge and joint work on offshore wind, which promises to be an important technology for generating large volumes of renewable energy in the future, but which still lacks its own regulatory framework in the country.
Ocean Winds said in a statement that it “strategically directs its efforts to Brazil” due to the country’s potential to “meet the growing demand for renewable energy in the long term, support the energy transition and generate opportunities for the supply chain and local communities.”
With projects under study in Brazil since 2021, Ocean Winds has already filed licensing requests with Ibama for 15 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power, to be installed in the waters of Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul.
Eletrobras, the largest electric company in Latin America, has a large renewable energy generation park, but predominantly hydroelectric, with a still timid presence in onshore wind power.
“The agreement signed with Ocean Winds allows for the development of strategic cooperation, which will contribute to making generating sources in Brazil and around the world increasingly cleaner and renewable, ensuring the decarbonization of the economy with energy security,” said Eletrobras’ director of M&A and business development, Leonardo Soares Walter.
