New Seismic Survey Begins at Buzios Field

In August, Petrobras obtained an environmental license from Ibama to begin seismic research activities in the Búzios Field, in the Santos Basin. This is the second OBN (Ocean Bottom Nodes) acquisition for the field, and the first for 4D monitoring

The goal is to generate high-quality data, with cutting-edge technology, to improve the identification of the distribution of oil, gas and water in the reservoir. Seismic acquisition is expected to begin between September and October 2024 and is expected to last eight months.

4D seismic will also allow monitoring of pressure changes and provide information on connectivity, optimizing reservoir management.

“Technology will help us identify new project opportunities for the field, resulting in an increase in the recovery factor and incorporation of new reserves,” emphasizes Petrobras’ Exploration and Production Director, Sylvia Anjos.

The executive manager of the Búzios Field, Wagner Victer, emphasizes that the 4D seismic project in the Búzios Field will deposit 3,500 sensor nodes in an area of 780 km², on the seabed.

“This equipment will be able to map, in the pre-salt, oil deposits in an area of 330 km² of geological interest to the company, where most of our production is currently concentrated. Technology is a great ally for Petrobras to increasingly surpass operational efficiency rates,” he stated.

Seismic monitoring in Búzios represents Petrobras’ commitment to technical excellence and sustainability. The company’s activities at the site are carried out responsibly and safely, reducing environmental risks and optimizing resources.

Búzios Field

Located 180 km from the coast, the Búzios field began operating in 2018 and has been collecting positive results, in addition to being the most productive wells in the country, at a depth of over 2 thousand meters. The thickness of its reservoir is the same height as Sugarloaf Mountain – and its extension corresponds to more than twice that of Guanabara Bay.

The largest field in the world in ultra-deep waters, Búzios this year reached the mark of 1 billion barrels of oil produced since it began operating in 2018.
