Tolmasquim says Petrobras is still waiting for regulatory framework to enter Offshore Wind power

(PN) The director of Energy Transition and Sustainability at Petrobras, Mauricio Tolmasquim, said today that the company is still awaiting the approval of a legal framework for offshore wind power to definitively enter this new sector.

“We will not enter offshore wind until we have the regulatory framework. But just having the law is not enough, we need to organize auctions for area concessions and then we need to see the viability of the projects to have demand for electricity. These are necessary conditions”, said Tolmasquim. Currently, Petrobras has 23 GW in environmental licensing requests at the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (Ibama).

The director also highlighted that Brazil has winds that enable greater productivity of wind farms compared to Europe, a region that invests more intensely in this segment. “A wind turbine installed in Brazil has the capacity to produce twice as much energy compared to Europe,” he declared.

Also Tolmasquim stated that Brazil has the potential to expand its solar energy generation capacity by up to 100 times. Currently, according to him, the installed capacity in the country is 30 gigawatts (GW), a number that he considers significant, but which has the potential for a large-scale increase.
