Petrobras starts drilling the Anhanga well on the Equatorial Margin

(PN) While still awaiting approval to drill in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, Petrobras is advancing its exploratory program at another point in the so-called Equatorial Margin. This month, the company began drilling a new well in block POT-M-762, in the Potiguar Basin, 79 km off the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The drill ship used in the activity was ODN-II, owned by Foresea.

The well has the technical name 1-RNS-161, but is internally called Anhanga by Petrobrás. It is close to the Pitu Oeste well, which was recently drilled by the company on the Equatorial Margin. Information about the Anhangá drilling was confirmed today by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP). The well began to be drilled on the 8th.

At the end of January, Petrobras announced that it had identified the presence of hydrocarbons in the Pitu Oeste exploratory well. The results, however, are still inconclusive regarding the economic viability of the area. Drilling at Pitu Oeste began at the end of December, also using the ODN-II drill ship. The water depth is 1,180 meters and the total depth was 4,230 meters.

Petrobras’ 2024-2028 Strategic Plan foresees an investment of US$3.1 billion for oil and gas research in the Equatorial Margin, where the company plans to drill 16 wells during this period.
