TotalEnergies submits four more licensing applications for additional 12.1 GW for offshore wind projects in Brazil

(epbr) TotalEnergies submitted four more licensing applications at IBAMA for offshore wind farms off the Brazilian coast. Together, the projects in Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul and Piauí total 12.1 GW in installed capacity.

The oil company already has another 9 GW in three offshore wind projects under licensing. In September, it signed an agreement with Petrobras and Casa dos Ventos to study renewable projects, including offshore wind.

In addition to TotalEnergies, Fiabe Participações also submitted for licensing a 2.8 GW project in Espírito Santo.

According to the latest update from IBAMA, there are 96 requests totaling 234.2 GW, which represents an increase of 15 GW in projects since the last version of the document, from September 2023, when there were 219.2 GW under licensing, with the Petrobras’ announcement of entry into the sector.

The movement reveals developers’ interest in the sector in Brazil, despite the crisis affecting several offshore wind projects around the world, and the lack of final regulation in the sector in Brazil.

The market is awaiting the legal framework for offshore wind farms, approved by the Chamber (PL 11247/2018) at the end of November, with several amendments in relation to the original topic, and which is now at the Senate for a decision.
