(epbr) The Pelotas Basin is one of the areas that Petrobras is evaluating in the permanent offer from the National Petroleum Agency (ANP).
The basin is located in the south of the country, on the border with Uruguay, where discoveries were made in deep waters in the last decade. Petrobras does not yet have any blocks in the region.
There is potential in the region for prospects in shallow waters, as well as in deep waters, according to Petrobras’ director of exploration and production, Joelson Mendes.
On Monday, the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, mentioned the Pelotas Basin, as well as offshore Argentina, when citing possibilities of new exploration frontiers for the state-owned company.
“In the South, there is the Pelotas Basin, in front of Rio Grande do Sul, which was, in the times when Campos and Santos were considered with great potential — and still are —, something for one day, when you need it”, he stated in participation in the Roda Viva program.
At the moment, Petrobras has focused on opening new frontiers in the Equatorial Margin, in the North and Northeast of the country. According to the director, possible exploration in Pelotas does not compete with activities on the Equatorial Margin.
