A new chapter in the history of Petrobras’ problems with flexible risers. A line connected to the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis, located in the Lula field, broke on the 21st. According to Petrobrás, there was no damage to the environment and it was also not necessary to stop production.
The state-owned company also said that the well was automatically closed by the platform’s security system and that it is now working to investigate the causes of this incident involving the riser.
As a reminder, Petronotícia extensively covered the first episodes of riser ruptures in the pre-salt layer. The aggressive environment in the layer causes the lines to suffer from a problem called in the technical environment of SCC (Stress Corrosion Craking).
The first case happened in 2017 with the lines manufactured by TechnipFMC for the fields in Lula and Sapinhoá. In an exclusive report to Petronotícia, Petrobras’ retired engineer, João Batista Assis Pereira, denounced that the state company hired the flexible risers without including in the agreement or previously agreeing the so-called CRI – Constructor Risk Insurance. In addition, the company would also have abdicated from including efficient clauses and conditions for fines (penalties) and liability of the parties.
