The Internet of Things is already a reality in many companies in the oil and gas sector, such as the case of Chevron, which managed to reduce the response time to critical and unexpected conditions by 90%.
In Rio de Janeiro, the company has adopted a system in the FPSO Frade that allows real-time data to be read and analyzed, capable of monitoring emergency valves and critical limits of equipment even without the presence of operators on the ship.
The technology is produced by OSIsoft, a Silicon Valley company. With the system, shipboard monitoring data is now stored on a single server, allowing the IT department to keep information from different devices in a single corporate governance model.
“This makes it easier for operators to share information with each other, giving more agility to all maintenance processes,” says Chevron Petroleum Engineer Carlos Britto. “We have saved more than $ 300,000 a year in maintenance and training of the team,” he added.
Prior to the deployment of the technology, the maintenance engineers’ difficulty was the limited amount of data to decide which equipment should be monitored. For safety reasons, more equipment was inspected than really needed.
